Each joint has a standard taper. The first 2 digits represents the diameter of the tapered male joint (or inside diameter of the top of the female joint). The next or second 2 digits means the length of the joint. For example, a 24/29 joint on a condenser will fit into a 24/40 flask but the ground glass joint will be ‘shorter’ (29 – 40) -11 mm into the flask.
